How to run a Pennies Program that will get your school to the TOP!
Tips and Tricks from the Teachers who were the 2014-2015 Top fundraising school in WA & AK
We chatted with our first time coordinators, Molly and Kate, about how they brought in over $18,000 in donations to beat cancer. Here is what they had to say:
#1 There must be an award at the end of the program for the students!
#2 Parents/Community have some sort of buy-in
They brought in Robert Turbin, Seahawks player if they met their goal of $12,000 (in connection with the 12th Man and the Seahawks), which they did!
#3 Matching Funds which brought in over $5,000!
#4 Mc’Teachers Night
“They got so pumped seeing us work at McDonalds!” - Molly
- 100% of cookie sales go to the program
- Students would buy $5 for a strip of tape to tape their principle to the chair at McDonalds (only did this for half an hour)
- There was a place for students to donate money for different teachers to get pied in the face, voting (via dollars) was up for 3 hours
- Top three teachers were then pied in the face at an assembly
- Can find out more about it here.
#5 School Thermometer should be HUGE:
- The bigger the thermometer the better!
- Each level (every $4,000) the students won a prize
- First level – all school recess
- Second level – movie at lunch
- Third level – 12th man surprise! (which was Robert Turbin coming to visit their school!)
#6 Grade competitions:
- 4/5th graders get all day movie day (day before spring break which allowed teachers to get all their work done during the day and have a free spring break)
- Younger age groups did PJ Day with one movie (too much energy to watch a movie all day)
#7 Daily Announcements letting school know how much they raised the day before and including blood cancer facts
#8 Student Council students would go by and collect coin boxes everyday from each class
#9 Teacher buy-in – teachers were really into the competition and rallied their students to raise money and beat their classmates
