Each year Rampart High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado conducts its Bald for Bucks assembly to support The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) mission. In 2004 a beloved and respected teacher at Rampart High School was losing her battle with cancer. The school community decided to conduct a fundraiser to allow her family to go on a vacation together. That year the Bald for Bucks assembly was created as 150 students and staff shaved their hair as a show of support for this gifted educator. Four years later, two years after she passed away, her oldest son asked if the assembly could be brought back to support LLS. Every year since then Rampart High School has held its Bald for Bucks assembly.
Each participant pledges to raise at least $25, though many raise much more. At the assembly, hair stylists volunteer to shave participants’ heads or cut off a minimum of 8 inches so participants can donate their hair to make wigs for cancer patients. Bald for Bucks has grown to a K-12 event as Academy Endeavour Elementary School and Mountain Ridge Middle School now participate.
Last year more than 270 people participated, raising more than $33,000. Since 2004, our school has raised more than $117,000. The Bald for Bucks assembly has come to define both the school and the community. The campaign provides students the opportunity to give to others in a dramatic manner. Many students shave their heads all four years of high school. Female students and staff who shave their heads are held in high esteem and viewed as heroes in our school.
In addition to the assembly, our school supports LLS with a variety of fundraisers, including Comics for Cancer, a dodge ball tournament, fundraisers at basketball games, and a school talent show. Our school is honored and proud to support The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
