Rampart High School Bald for Bucks 2015-2016
Bald for Bucks began in 2004 to raise money for a popular English teacher who was battling cancer for the 4th time. Penny Sandford's doctors had told her that she should start making time to spend with her family. She was reluctant to give up teaching but was eventually forced to retire because of the cancer. A few of her colleagues conducted a fundraiser for a family trip to Orlando. Bald for Bucks was part of that fundraising. The goal was $3.000 and we raised $5.600. Two years later Penny passed away. When her oldest son was a senior at Rampart, and student body president, he asked to bring back the assembly to support Pennies for Patients.
Bald for Bucks is a Rampart High School campaign to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Rampart recently celebrated their 8th assembly. When a student signs up to participate, they pledge to raise at least $25 and agree to shave their heads or donate to locks of Love. Each participant and volunteer stylist receives a t-shirt. This year Rampart conducted a K through 12 event with an elementary and middle school joining us. Rampart had 273 students, staff, parents, and Air Force personnel join us this year. This included 32 females that were students, moms, and alumni who were in college. Over the past two years Rampart has raised more than $65,000 and over $117,000 since we began supporting pennies for Patients. Also, Bald for Bucks has become successful in creating an awareness of the mission of LLS and the stories of individuals battling cancer.
